Joan Jonas

Joan Jonas was born in 1936 in New York. She is considered as one of the pioneers in performance and video art. Since the 1960s the American artist has been reflecting on feminine subjectivity by using a complex linguistic repertoire that integrates gesture, narrative and the moving image. Her very first works demonstrate an involvement with space, which she uses in her performances as a raw material to interrogate her relation with the audience. A polyvalent artist and an indefatigable experimenter, she has become an iconic reference for a whole generation of young artists with whom she has set up an intense and generous dialogue. From her first self-reflexive works to her latest ones focused on text and narrative, her art is made distinctive by a thematic approach that examines reality and its representations. The artist often includes in her works other artists and dancers, her own friends, her own pets even. These characters, accompanied by fancy creatures, inhabit dream-like representations when myth mingles with, and is superimposed to, everyday reality.
