Robert Barry

Robert Barry, né en 1936 à New York, est l’une des figures majeures de l’art conceptuel. Au sein de cette première génération d’artistes qui opèrent à partir du langage, Barry se distingue par la forme typographique de ses œuvres. Il a toujours eu, envers l'art conceptuel, une attitude exclusive et partisane, en opérant à la frontière de l'art visuel, de la poésie et de la philosophie. Si à la fin des années 60, il s’intéresse particulièrement aux phénomènes physiques et aux matériaux invisibles, rejetant l’idée que l’art est nécessairement quelque chose à regarder, son intérêt pour le langage participe d’une nouvelle pensée sur l’art où les images mentales se substituent aux images réelles. Depuis, il travaille à partir des mots et de la pensée et a recours pour ses œuvres à nombre de media différents tels que l’édition, la projection, l’installation sonore, la peinture, le film, la gravure, etc.

Il vit et travaille dans le New Jersey.
