Douglas Gordon

Douglas Gordon agit et réagit avec divers médiums tels le cinéma et la vidéo,  installation, sculpture, photographie et texte. Il crée des installations où le spectateur est invité à expérimenter le rapport aux images et à la narration ; entre jeu d’appropriation et de détournement, l’artiste met à l’épreuve leur matérialité afin d’explorer des thèmes récurrents comme la vie et la mort, le bien et le mal, l'innocence et la culpabilité, la tentation et la peur. Entre culture populaire et éléments autobiographiques, mémoire personnelle et mémoire collective, chaque œuvre dresse un véritable portrait des obsessions de l'artiste et invite le spectateur à questionner son rapport au monde, ce qui lui est donné à voir et l’interprétation que nous en faisons à partir de nos connaissances et expériences passées. Des œuvres d’anthologie telle 24 Hour Psycho (1993), dans lequel il a ralenti le film mythique d'Alfred Hitchcock dans la durée d'une journée complète et où le suspens est déconstruit à dessein ou le film Zidane, un portrait du 21e siècle (2006, avec Philippe Parreno) dans lequel plusieurs caméras ont pris en chasse les faits et gestes de la star du football lors d'un match décisif en l’exfiltrant du jeu collectif, sont des exemples qui désormais font partie du panthéon de l’art contemporain.
Les oeuvres de Douglas Gordon ont été exposées internationalement et ses films présentés dans de nombreuses compétitions, tels que le Festival de Cannes, le Festival International du film de Toronto et celui de Venise. Il est le lauréat du prix Turner de 1996, Premio 2000 à la Biennale de Venise de 1997. Hugo Boss de 1998. Plus récemment, il a reçu le prix Roswitha Haftmann  du Kunsthaus de Zurich ainsi que le prix Kathe-Kollwitz de l’Akademie der Kunste de Berlin. Douglas Gordon fut membre du jury international du 65ème Festival International du film de Venise et le président du jury de CinemaXXI au 7ème Festival International  du film de Rome.
Né à Glasgow en Ecosse en 1966,  Il vit et travaille à Berlin et Glasgow et enseigne le film à la Städelschule de Francfort.
